Genre: Melodic Death Metal (though this particular song is more heavy metal in my opinion)
Location: Sweden
Themes: Vikings, Norse mythology
Two weeks ago Amon Amarth released their new music video for “Mjolner, Hammer of Thor,” from their new Berserker album.
Of all the Amon Amarth stuff I’ve heard, this is their most different sounding content yet. It sounds more heavy metal than their stuff in the past. Though I’m not sure if I’m a fan, because in my opinion, I like it when a band retains something of their signature sound, while changing it up in various ways. Behemoth, for example, does a great job of that. The Satanist was very different, but if you listened to it, you could definitely tell that it was Behemoth.
With this song, and some of the other songs I’ve listened to from Berserker, I wouldn’t be able to tell it was Amon Amarth (if not for the vocals). And this particular song sounded too much like a generic heavy metal song, of which there are already plenty.
My suggestion to Amon Amarth for their next album is to get back to their signature sound, what makes them them, what makes them unique, and find new ways to evolve that sound, rather than turning into a different band entirely.
Above is a (relatively) new Amon Amarth video released January 25th, 2016. ‘First Kill’ is from Amon Amarth’s new album, Jomsviking, available March 25th. Album Pre-order + North American Pre-sale Tickets available now at http://www.amonamarth.com.
The production quality of this video is excellent. I also appreciate that the vikings in this video are dressed in a way that is closer to the way historians believe the vikings dressed, rather than what is typically depicted in the media. For instance, much of the way the characters on the History Channel’s ‘Vikings’ dress is more like leather outfits from the biker bar.
I’m guessing the album itself is about the Jomsvikings, a semi-legendary order of Viking mercenaries, or brigands, in the 10th and 11th century. They were staunchly Pagan and dedicated to the worship of deities such as Odin and Thor. They reputedly would fight for any lord able to pay their substantial fees and occasionally fought alongside Christian rulers. Although they were Pagan, the institutions of the Jomsvikings in some ways anticipated those of the Christian Knightly Orders of the later Middle Ages.
In terms of song writing, Amon Amarth doesn’t disappoint. Catchy. Fun. Bad ass.
Don’t miss their 2016 tour as they pillage a town near you.
Did Amon Amarth just make a movie or a music video? Amon Amarth’s highly awaited “Father of the Wolf” video was just released on January 17th 2014 (yesterday!) Fans who wondered why the video took so long to release now only have to look at the theater quality production behind the video to see why. The song itself is part of Amon Amarth’s newest album “Deceiver of the Gods,” so of course the theme is going to be heavily centered around Loki.
Personally, I actually feel like the introduction to the video was a bit too long. I think it would have been better of they incorporated the cinematics mostly with the music, with perhaps a 1 or 2 minute introduction. I think too much talk in the beginning kind of takes away from the music – or maybe I’m just being an extra splintery stick in the mud.
But with that aside, enjoy the video. It will leave you with a strange desire to play Skyrim and take over the world.
Also, Amon Amarth is headlining at a series of kick ass shows in the U.S. Don’t miss em!

So thanks everyone for your help! Couldn’t have done it without you!
Let’s celebrate with Amon Amarth’s “1,000 Years of oppression” as a reminder of what we’re overcoming.
May the torch of our ancestors burn bright, may we hold this torch with courage and might.
Long live the Ancient Ways! Long live the eternal!
When you imagine the stereotypical dictator, you conjure images of an angry Hitler yelling at his minions. What do you imagine when you think of the typical bad guy? A frowning terrorist who hates freedom? An ugly man in the shadows with a goatee and a weird accent?
What if I were to tell you that the worst enemies of mankind are the happy killers – the nice killers? The well groomed politicians on TV crying over a shooting while they bomb children overseas. The well wishing priests kissing children before they give their blessing to a war that will kill thousands (maybe even millions). Some of the most evil men in this world wear three piece suits or religious robes. Not saying every Politician or Religious Man is evil, but I’m telling you that the most dangerous wolves often wear sheep’s clothing.
SLAVES OF FEAR
They speak of love and tolerance,
and thrive on people’s ignorance
to make you all slaves of fear.
They feed on your anxiety,
to build their gent society,
They kept you down for a thousand years.
They nurture prejudice and hate
condemn the wars that they create
in the name of whatever god.
They gladly sacrifice your lives,
increasing power is their vice,
without regrets, they will spill your blood.
They’re feeding you lies,
with calculated smiles,
Enslavement of the human mind
As long as you kneel to their authority.
Religion is what makes you blind
They’re treating you as mindless fools,
they use you as obedient tools
It’s time to set your spirit free
This world we can not tolerate,
it’s time to seal all preachers fate,
and let them hang from Odin’s tree!
Your minds are restrained
Obedience is the chain
They’ve locked you up and thrown away the key
Your souls are for sale,
And you’re the ones who pay
But still, you’ll never be set free
They’re feeding you lies,
with calculated smiles,
Enslavement of the human mind
As long as you kneel to their authority.
Religion is what makes you blind.
NO MORE SLAVES OF FEAR
RISE, BECOME WARRIORS OF COURAGE
These well groomed, happy faced killers have been using religion and politics for centuries to mold their people into complacent, mild and meek slaves of fear. Those who turn the other cheek will not rise up against tyranny. Some of the worst forms of oppression and holocaust have come at the hands of Christians who believe in “pacifism and peace” – more like the pacifism of the enemy while they let them rest in peace (RIP).
The Mass Media and News continue this tradition today. They try to scare you with stories about constant mass shootings (even though very few people actually died from gun related accidents last year, less than from fist related murders actually). These same people try to use Terrorism to scare you into abdicating your personal freedoms. More United States Citizens die from a lack of health insurance and environmental toxins each year than they do from Terrorism.
Embrace the strength and wisdom of your ancestors. Many Pre-Christian religions venerated strength, will-power and the bold desire to act. Never let your life be manipulated by fear. If you live in fear – you are as good as dead already.
Need some music to sword fight and pillage to? Check out my Amon Amarth favorite. Yes, yes I know this song came out back in 2008, but I love it so much that I decided it must be spread on the internet like a 13th century plague. Okay! Bad example! But I digress. The Twilight of the Thunder Gods album as a whole stood out to me more than the other Amon Amarth albums. As vikings they upgraded from raiding monastaries, to pillaging the Vatican and burning the pope’s underwear. Okay, bad example again!
Yet there is definitely something different about this album. Could it be that they got the guitarist Roope Latvala from Children of Bodom to play a solo track on this song? Could it be that they got the Cello metal folks from Apocalyptica and the vocalist, Lars Petrov from Entombed to contribute to other songs on the album. Nah. I just think they were a little extra viking the day they made this album.
Side note: apparently the sword fighting in this video is not that accurate – but is the sword fighting in any metal video that realistic?
Ragna Rok is a Norse prophesy of destruction and rebirth.
Othin, chief of the Gods, calls on a “Volva” – or wise woman. She talks of talks of the past – the creation of the world, the dwarfs, the creation of men and women, etc.
But then she speaks of the future ahead – the final destruction of the Gods. The final battle. In this battle, fire and flood will overwhelm heaven and earth as the Gods fight their enemies. Valkyries will bring the slain warriors to support Othin and the other Gods in battle. Othin will be slain as fire leaps high over heaven itself.
But this is not all.
A new and beautiful world rises to replace the ruins of the old.
Because creation of the new must result from destruction of the old.
Old prophesies relate to the near future.
The world needs vikings. Vikings believed that the most honorable deed was to fight an enemy greater than themselves.
We face a world where Goliath sized corporations and the mega-rich are seizing a majority of the world’s resources, using political strings to start wars for oil and destroying life on the planet for the sake of money.
Most of us know that what our leaders are doing is wrong. Yet few have the courage to fight.
Speak out. Fight.
Your sword will cut the throat of liars and murderers
Their heads will tumble to the ground
Let their heads lie where they belong
In a pool of their toxic blood.
I do not claim credit for this fan made video, but I believe it is awesome.
