Iceland to Build First Temple to Norse Gods Since Viking Age

For the first time in 1,000 years, a temple to the Norse Gods will be built in Iceland. Most pagans these days tend to worship in each other’s houses or outside somewhere, since our numbers are pretty low. So this will definitely be a historic landmark for Iceland – if not for the whole Pagan community in general.
Icelanders will soon be able to publicly worship at a shrine to Thor, Odin and Frigg with construction starting this month on the island’s first major temple to the Norse gods since the Viking age.
While the number of Norse Pagans is small in Iceland, the rate of growth itself is pretty large. The number has tripled in the last decade. So it makes sense that a temple will be built to accommodate this growing community.
This temple will be a place where weddings, funerals and initiation rites will take place.
After 1,000 years of oppression the old ways will re-emerge once again.

It’s about time something this grand comes to be. Though I am not a strict-practicing Heathen or anything (yet), this is wonderful news. Just wonder what is going on in the minds at the Vatican? – Heh-heh-heh. I am willing to bet this will get the “fundie-section” in an uproar.
I hope someone will be able to post some nice pictures of it when things are finished up. I always appreciate some neat architecture of something different.

Yeah. I’d love to see some pics as well. It’s always interesting how different religions celebrate the sacred through architecture. I do think Catholic churches are really beautiful, but then I feel bad about all the money they spent on the way their church looks – when that money could have gone towards feeding the poor.
I’d also love to visit this temple one day.

Not to get me wrong, I do know of some very good folks who are Catholic, but their basic premises and doctrines (mostly through very one-sided interpretations) are where I have the most heartburn.
It is way past time to see the re-emergence of “The Old Ways” of respect of Nature, and of all Things within. Asatru and Heathenry, I hold in high esteem and respect for their very basic, commonsense attitudes and basis. Though much of the old Buddhism and Hinduism are very compatible with my own beliefs, Asatru sounds more in tune with me, and with my views on the beauty of Nature, and the powers therefrom. – It “Speaks” to me, a very personal calling, and sings as music to my Soul.
BTW: I have read one version of the Poetic Eddas. I have always loved those stories, and think of them in a similar to Aesop’s Fables. – All of them have some kind of “Moral” to their words.
