Native American Rapper “Supaman” Combines Traditional Music With The Modern
Supaman just became MTV’s number 1 rapper of the week. Other newsflash…apparently MTV still plays music these days?
I don’t EVER post rap or hip hop music on this blog. But I thought what this artist was doing was creative enough for me to break a few rules. In the video above, the Native American Rapper Supaman combines the traditional instruments and song of his people with his own rapping and modern style dancing.

Another interesting article “Rapping on the Reservation” (NPR), Supaman discusses how Native Americans can relate to the struggles of the inner city, in terms of issues like poverty, teenage pregnancy, crime, drugs and alcohol.

I don’t care for rap or hiphop style music because to me it isn’t music. But this gentleman has the courage to go against tradition as all the younger men and women do to prove their was is better. More power to him also for his concerns and understanding, but will he do something other than just rap? Just curious.

Looks like he’s probably sticking to Rap. I’m not much into Hip Hop or Rap either, most of it is just CRAP without the “c” if you know what I mean. Yet I can appreciate the political message of early hip hop and rap of the 80’s and 90’s. Many of the poor kids in the ghetto couldn’t always afford musical instruments, but their own voice and a basic rhythm was possible. They used their voice and rhythm to create a sort of harsh “rhythm and poetry (RAP)” about life in the hood. A lot of this early RAP was about crime, drugs, alcohol and police brutality.
Yet as it became more popular the music was absorbed by the music industry in the 2000’s, which created a more cookie cutter version of rap that was about fame, cars, sex, pussy, the club and all those classy topics we hear on the radio today.
I can respect this guy Supaman because I think he recognized that a lot of the lyrical content of popular rap is pretty stupid, and he even admitted in his interview that rap had a negative effect on him in his early years. He’s trying to create a positive message for the Crow Nation people about lifting themselves out of poverty and alcoholism.
I can respect the man for that.
However, if you are interested in Native American Metal, I have two suggestions.
First, the singer of Testament is half Native American and released an awesome song called “Native Blood”
Also, there is a Native American Folk metal group called Nechochwen.

Great! I love MOST music and have enjoyed listening to some native American music Both traditional and more metal/rock style. Will save the sites and look them up this evening. 🙂
